The UK hosts major sporting events and has produced many famous competitors. London has hosted the Olympic Games on three occasions, the most recent being in 2012, when the Games were held mainly in East London and proved a great success for British athletes.
Among the country's well-known sportspeople is Sir Andy Murray, a Scottish tennis player who won Olympic gold and major Grand Slam titles. Athletes such as Sir Mo Farah, a distance runner who won Olympic gold over 5,000 and 10,000 metres, and Mary Peters, a pentathlon champion who later promoted sport in Northern Ireland, are also celebrated. The simplest facts to fix in mind are London 2012 for the Olympics and Andy Murray for tennis.
