Cookie policy
This explains the cookies and similar technologies the Life in the UK Test 2026 website uses, and how you can control them. The mobile app uses no cookies and works fully offline.
What cookies are
Cookies are small files stored in your browser. Some are needed for the site to work, others are only set if you allow them. We group ours into three categories: necessary, analytics and advertising. The named cookies below are typical defaults and should be confirmed against the live site in production.
Necessary cookies
These are always on because the site cannot work properly without them. We do not need your consent for these under the UK Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations.
| Cookie | Purpose | Set by |
|---|---|---|
| authjs.session-token (and the secure host variant) | Keeps you signed in to your account. Only set if you create an account and sign in. | Life in the UK Test 2026 (Auth.js) |
| authjs.csrf-token | Protects sign-in and account forms against cross-site request forgery. | Life in the UK Test 2026 (Auth.js) |
| authjs.callback-url | Remembers where to send you back to after you sign in. | Life in the UK Test 2026 (Auth.js) |
| cookie_consent | Remembers your cookie choices so we do not ask again on every visit. Lasts about six months. | Life in the UK Test 2026 |
Analytics cookies
These are only set after you allow analytics in the cookie banner. Until then no analytics script loads and no analytics cookie is set. We use Google Analytics 4 to understand how the site is used so we can improve it. It processes usage data including a truncated IP address.
| Cookie | Purpose | Set by |
|---|---|---|
| Google Analytics cookies (for example _ga and _ga_*) | Tell visits apart and measure how the site is used so we can improve it. |
Advertising cookies
These are only set after you allow advertising in the cookie banner. Until then no advertising script loads and no advertising cookie is set. Free use of the site is supported by Google AdSense, which is shown to people who are not paying subscribers.
| Cookie | Purpose | Set by |
|---|---|---|
| Google AdSense cookies (for example __gads, __gpi, IDE and similar) | Used to show ads, limit how often you see the same ad, and measure ad performance. Some may be used for personalised advertising depending on your Google settings. |
How Consent Mode v2 works
We use Google Consent Mode v2. In plain terms, until you make a choice we tell Google to treat analytics storage, ad storage, ad user data and ad personalisation as denied, so nothing non-essential is set. When you allow a category, we update the matching consent signal and the relevant Google scripts may then run. If you only allow analytics, advertising stays denied, and the other way round. Paying subscribers do not see ads at all.
Changing your choice
You can change your cookie choice at any time using the control in the footer of every page. You can reject non-essential cookies and still use the whole site.
Controlling cookies in your browser
Most browsers let you see what cookies are stored and delete or block them from their settings. Blocking necessary cookies may stop parts of the site, such as signing in, from working. You can manage Google ad personalisation in your Google account ad settings.
