Life in the UK Test FAQ

Common questions about the Life in the UK Test and about using this free study aid. For anything official, including booking and fees, always check GOV.UK.

What is the Life in the UK Test?

The Life in the UK Test is a computer-based test that checks your knowledge of British values, history, traditions and everyday life. You usually need to pass it to apply for indefinite leave to remain or for British citizenship.

How many questions are in the Life in the UK Test and how long is it?

The official test has 24 questions and you have 45 minutes to answer them. The timed exams on this site use the same 24 question, 45 minute format so you can practise under real conditions.

What score do I need to pass the Life in the UK Test?

You need to answer at least 18 of the 24 questions correctly, which is 75 percent. Our timed exams score you against this same 18 out of 24 pass mark.

Who needs to take the Life in the UK Test?

Most people applying for indefinite leave to remain or British citizenship need to pass the test. There are some exemptions, for example by age or for certain medical conditions. Always confirm whether you need to take it on GOV.UK.

How much does the official Life in the UK Test cost?

The official test has a booking fee set by the government, payable when you book a slot at an approved test centre. Confirm the current fee and how to book on GOV.UK, as our prices below are only for this study aid, not the test itself.

Is this website official or connected to the Home Office?

This is an independent study aid to help you prepare for the Life in the UK Test. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to HM Government, the Home Office, UK Visas and Immigration, or the official test provider. All questions and study notes are original content written from publicly available facts about UK history, society and government. The official handbook is Crown copyright and is not reproduced here. Always confirm current test requirements at GOV.UK.

Is this site free to use?

Yes. Most of the site is completely free and works without an account, including the revision notes, the topic practice questions, the mock tests and the timed exams. There is an optional paid plan for extra study features.

What does the £1.99/month Premium plan add?

Premium adds spaced-repetition revision that schedules your weak questions for review, saved progress that syncs across your devices, mock and exam history with your scores over time, and an ad free experience. The free practice always stays free.

Is there a mobile app?

Yes, there is a companion mobile app that lets you study offline, with the same questions and revision notes. This website works on phones, tablets and computers too, so you can revise in the browser without installing anything.

How should I revise for the Life in the UK Test?

Read each chapter's notes first, then practise that topic straight away while it is fresh. Once you feel confident, sit full mock tests to check your knowledge, and finish with timed exams to get used to the clock. Short, regular sessions work better than cramming.

How accurate is the content on this site?

Every note, question and explanation is original content written from publicly available facts about UK history, society and government. We do not reproduce the official handbook or use confidential official questions. We aim for accuracy, but you should always confirm current requirements on GOV.UK.

What edition of the Life in the UK material is this based on?

The content is based on the topics covered by the current official Life in the UK syllabus, the third edition of the handbook material, covering British values, history, society and government. We keep the facts general and confirm them against publicly available sources.

How many practice questions are there?

There are over a thousand practice questions across the five chapters, plus 24 questions in every full mock test and timed exam. That gives you plenty of fresh material so you are not just memorising a short list.

Do I need to create an account to practise?

No. You can use the revision notes, practice questions, mock tests and timed exams without signing in. An account is only needed if you want to save your progress across devices or subscribe to the Premium study features.

Ready to start?

Begin with the chapter revision notes, try some practice questions, or sit a full mock test.
