Study note

Sport plays a huge part in life in the UK, and a number of major sports actually began here, including cricket, football, golf, rugby and lawn tennis. Football is the most popular sport in the country, watched and played by millions, and the English Premier League is followed around the world. Baseball, ice hockey and basketball, by contrast, did not originate in the UK.

Cricket originated in England and remains a popular summer game. Golf is strongly associated with Scotland, where the modern game can be traced back to the 15th century. Tennis is famous for the Wimbledon Championships, a world-renowned grass-court tournament held in London each year. So when you think of UK sport, remember that football is the most popular, cricket and rugby come from England, golf is linked with Scotland, and Wimbledon means tennis.
