National flowers and saints' days
Study note
Each nation of the UK has a national flower linked to it, which is sometimes worn on its patron saint's day. England is associated with the rose, Scotland with the thistle, Wales with the daffodil and Northern Ireland with the shamrock.
Each nation also has a patron saint with a national day. St David is the patron saint of Wales, with St David's Day on 1 March. St Patrick is the patron saint of Northern Ireland, with St Patrick's Day on 17 March. St George is the patron saint of England, on 23 April, and St Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland, on 30 November. Note that St Stephen is not one of the four UK patron saints, and St David is linked with Wales rather than Northern Ireland.
Memory tip: David 1 Mar, Patrick 17 Mar, George 23 Apr, Andrew 30 Nov.
