Patron saints' days

Study note

Each of the four nations of the UK has its own patron saint, and each saint has a national day. St David is the patron saint of Wales, and St David's Day is on 1 March. St Patrick is the patron saint of Northern Ireland, with St Patrick's Day on 17 March. St George is the patron saint of England, celebrated on 23 April, and St Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland, whose day falls on 30 November.

Although all four days are marked in some way, only Scotland and Northern Ireland have their patron saint's day as an official public holiday. A useful order to memorise is David on 1 March, Patrick on 17 March, George on 23 April and Andrew on 30 November.

Memory tip: David (1 Mar), Patrick (17 Mar), George (23 Apr), Andrew (30 Nov).
