Architecture: Sir Christopher Wren

Study note

The UK has notable buildings from many different periods of history. One of its most famous architects was Sir Christopher Wren, who worked in the late 17th century. After the Great Fire of London destroyed much of the city in 1666, including the old cathedral, Wren was given the task of rebuilding.

His most celebrated work is the new St Paul's Cathedral in London, which he designed with its famous dome and which still stands as a London landmark today. So the fact to remember is that Sir Christopher Wren designed St Paul's Cathedral after the Great Fire of London in 1666. Other great churches such as Westminster Abbey, Canterbury Cathedral and York Minster were not designed by him.

Memory tip: Sir Christopher Wren designed St Paul's Cathedral after the 1666 Great Fire of London.
