The Turner Prize and UK galleries
Study note
The Turner Prize was set up in 1984 and celebrates contemporary, or modern, art. It is named after the landscape painter Joseph Turner, and the works of the shortlisted artists are displayed at Tate Britain in London. The prize often features new and challenging styles of art and attracts a great deal of attention each year.
The UK has many famous galleries where art can be seen. In London these include the National Gallery, Tate Britain and Tate Modern. There is also the National Museum in Cardiff and the National Gallery of Scotland in Edinburgh. So for this topic, remember that the Turner Prize is named after Joseph Turner and shown at Tate Britain, and that the National Museum is the famous gallery in Cardiff.
