Pre-Raphaelites and more British artists

Study note

The Pre-Raphaelites were a group of British artists working in the second half of the 19th century. They painted detailed pictures, often on religious or literary themes, using bright, clear colours. They are remembered as one of the important movements in British painting.

Britain has produced many other notable artists. Sir John Lavery was a successful portrait painter from Northern Ireland. Lucian Freud, who was born in Germany but became British, was famous for his portraits. David Hockney helped to lead the pop art movement of the 1960s and remains a celebrated artist today. So for this topic, remember that the Pre-Raphaelites were a group of 19th-century artists and that David Hockney is linked with 1960s pop art.

Memory tip: Pre-Raphaelites: bright detailed 19th century pictures; Lavery (NI), Freud and Hockney (portraits/pop art).
