British painters
Study note
Britain has a strong tradition of painting and sculpture. Thomas Gainsborough, who worked in the 18th century, was famous for his portraits. In the late 18th and 19th centuries, John Constable and Joseph Turner became celebrated for their landscape paintings, with Constable known for his views of the English countryside and Turner for his dramatic use of light.
Britain has also produced important sculptors. Henry Moore was a well-known 20th-century sculptor famous for his large abstract bronze figures. So a useful summary is Gainsborough for portraits, Constable and Turner for landscapes, and Henry Moore for sculpture.
Memory tip: Gainsborough (portraits), Constable and Turner (landscapes), Henry Moore (sculpture).
