One of its most famous figures is William Shakespeare, a playwright and poet whose plays are still performed all over the world. His name is closely tied to the theatre rather than to science or politics.

Music is celebrated each summer through the BBC Proms, a well-known series of classical music concerts that ends with the famous Last Night of the Proms. In the visual arts, the Turner Prize is a famous award given for contemporary, or modern, art rather than for gardening or any other field.
