Florence Nightingale, founder of modern nursing
Study note
Florence Nightingale was born in Italy to English parents and trained as a nurse in Germany. In 1854 she went to Turkey and worked in military hospitals treating soldiers fighting in the Crimean War, improving conditions and reducing the death rate. In 1860 she set up the Nightingale Training School for nurses in London, and she is regarded as the founder of modern nursing.
