The Crimean War and the Victoria Cross
Study note
Britain fought in the Crimean War during the 1850s, alongside France and Turkey against Russia. It was one of the first wars to be widely reported in newspapers, so people at home learned a great deal about the conditions soldiers faced.
During this war, Queen Victoria introduced a new medal, the Victoria Cross, to honour acts of great bravery. The Victoria Cross is still the highest award for bravery that can be given to members of the British armed forces. It is a medal for courage, not a type of cathedral, a famous painting or a British coin. Remember the link clearly: the Crimean War of the 1850s led Queen Victoria to create the Victoria Cross for bravery.
Memory tip: Crimean War (1850s) → Queen Victoria creates the Victoria Cross for bravery.
