The Crimean War (1853 to 1856)
Study note
The Crimean War was fought from 1853 to 1856. In it, Britain joined with Turkey and France to fight against Russia, so the opponent to remember is Russia, not Germany, Spain or Austria. The dates 1853 to 1856 are worth fixing in your mind.
The Crimean War was notable for several reasons. It was the first war to be widely reported by the media, through both news stories and photographs, bringing the realities of war home to the public. Many soldiers died not from their wounds but from illnesses they caught in the badly run hospitals. It was during this war that Queen Victoria introduced the Victoria Cross, a medal still awarded today to honour acts of outstanding bravery.
