Isambard Kingdom Brunel and the Great Western Railway

Study note

Isambard Kingdom Brunel was one of the greatest engineers of the 19th century. He designed and built many remarkable structures, including bridges, tunnels and ships, and his work helped transform travel and trade during the Industrial Revolution.

Among his most famous projects was the Great Western Railway, one of the first major railways in Britain. It linked London with the west of England and Wales, making long journeys faster and easier. It was the Great Western Railway that Brunel built, not the London Underground, the Channel Tunnel or the Scottish Highland line. Remember Brunel for the Great Western Railway, as well as his famous bridges, tunnels and ships.

Memory tip: Brunel built the Great Western Railway, plus famous bridges, tunnels and ships.
