Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Battle of Culloden (1746)
Study note
Charles Edward Stuart, better known as Bonnie Prince Charlie, was the grandson of the deposed king James II. In 1745 he landed in Scotland hoping to put the Stuart family back on the throne. He was supported by clansmen from the Scottish Highlands and at first had some success in his campaign.
His attempt did not last. He was defeated by the army of George II at the Battle of Culloden in 1746, and after the defeat he escaped back to mainland Europe. The facts to lock in are the real name Charles Edward Stuart, the nickname Bonnie Prince Charlie, that he was the grandson of James II, that Highland clansmen backed him, and above all that he lost, rather than won, at Culloden in 1746.
Memory tip: Bonnie Prince Charlie's Jacobite rising ends in defeat at Culloden in 1746.
