During the 18th century, the way Britain was governed continued to change, and the role of Prime Minister gradually developed. The Prime Minister became the leading minister who managed the government on the monarch's behalf and led the most powerful group of ministers.
Sir Robert Walpole is regarded as the first British Prime Minister. He held this leading position for a long time, from 1721 to 1742. He is not to be confused with later Prime Ministers such as Winston Churchill, or with military leaders such as the Duke of Wellington. The fact to remember is simple: Sir Robert Walpole was Britain's first Prime Minister, serving from 1721.
