Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Battle of Culloden (1746)
Study note
Charles Edward Stuart, better known as Bonnie Prince Charlie, was a grandson of James II. In 1745 he led a Jacobite rebellion, landing in Scotland to try to win back the throne for his family. For a time the rebellion seemed to threaten the government.
The Jacobite cause was crushed at the Battle of Culloden in 1746, where Bonnie Prince Charlie's forces were defeated. Culloden is often described as the last large battle fought on British soil. The rebellion ended at Culloden in 1746, not at the Boyne, Hastings or Waterloo, which belong to other times. Remember the nickname Bonnie Prince Charlie for Charles Edward Stuart, and the Battle of Culloden in 1746 as the end of his rebellion.
Memory tip: Bonnie Prince Charlie's rebellion ends at Culloden in 1746.
