George I and Prime Minister Robert Walpole

When Queen Anne died, George I, a German prince, became king because he was her nearest Protestant relative. As he spoke little English, he relied heavily on his ministers, and Sir Robert Walpole, the leading minister, came to be regarded as the first British Prime Minister.
Memory tip: German-speaking George I relied on ministers, so Walpole became the first PM.
