Responsibilities of residents

Study note

In the UK, rights always come hand in hand with responsibilities. People who live here are expected to behave in ways that keep society fair and orderly. The main responsibilities to learn are: respecting and obeying the law, respecting the rights and opinions of others, treating everyone with fairness, looking after yourself and your family, and looking after the area where you live and the wider environment.

These duties go beyond simply avoiding crime. Treating others fairly means not discriminating against people, and respecting their rights means accepting that they may think or believe differently from you. Looking after your family and providing for yourself takes pressure off the community, and caring for your local area, for example by not dropping litter, benefits everyone.

Test questions often offer false responsibilities such as disobeying laws you dislike, voting more than once, or ignoring other people's rights. None of these is a responsibility. If an option suggests breaking rules or acting selfishly, it is the wrong answer.

Memory tip: Respect the law, respect others, look after your family and your area.
