Looking after the environment

Study note

Looking after the environment and the local area is one of the responsibilities of people living in the UK. Caring for your surroundings is treated as part of being a good resident, because a clean and pleasant area benefits everyone who lives there.

There are simple, everyday ways to do this. Recycling waste rather than throwing everything away, and not dropping litter, both help to keep the local area in good condition. Choosing to walk or use public transport where you can, instead of driving, helps to reduce pollution and protect the environment for the future.

The opposite behaviours are the wrong answers in the test. Ignoring local rules, wasting resources such as water, or damaging public spaces like parks all harm the community rather than helping it. Remember that caring for your area and the environment is part of being a good resident.

Memory tip: Care for your area: recycle, don't litter, walk or use public transport.
