Taking part in community life

Study note

Taking part in community life is one of the fundamental principles of British society. Being a good citizen means more than just obeying the law. It means getting involved in the life of the place where you live and helping to make your community a better place for everyone.

There are many ways to take part. You might volunteer for a local charity, help a neighbour who is struggling, join a local group or club, or get involved in your children's school. Caring for the environment around you, such as recycling and not dropping litter, is also a way of contributing. These small actions strengthen the bonds between people who live in the same area.

In the test, good citizenship is shown by positive, active choices. Refusing to obey laws, ignoring your neighbours, or avoiding all local groups are the opposite of taking part, so they are wrong answers. Volunteering and helping others are the behaviours to look for.

Memory tip: Good citizens get involved: volunteer, help neighbours, care for the environment.
