Volunteering and helping others
Study note
Volunteering means giving your time to work for good causes without being paid. It is a valued part of community life in the UK. Volunteering is not about working only for high wages or avoiding community activity; the whole point is that it is unpaid and aimed at helping others.
Volunteering benefits the community, but it can also help the volunteer. People who volunteer often make new friends, practise their English and gain useful skills and experience for work. There are many ways to volunteer, for example helping at a charity, supporting a hospital, or joining a local environmental project. For the test, remember that volunteering is unpaid work for good causes, and that helping at a charity or joining an environmental project are good examples.
Memory tip: Volunteering = unpaid work for good causes; it helps the community and the volunteer.
