Your role in the community

Study note

Living in the UK comes with the chance to take part in the life of your local community, and doing so is encouraged. There are many positive ways to get involved. You can vote in elections, serve on a jury if you are called, volunteer for a good cause, or become a school governor to help run a local school. Being a good neighbour and helping others are also part of community life.

Jury service is one example of a civic duty. When called, ordinary members of the public help decide court cases, which keeps the justice system working fairly. By contrast, refusing to pay your taxes or ignoring elections is not a positive way of taking part in the community. For the test, the safe answers are the helpful, lawful activities such as voting, volunteering, jury service and becoming a school governor.

Memory tip: Get involved: vote, do jury service if called, volunteer, become a school governor.
