Forced Marriage Protection Orders

Study note

In the UK, a marriage must be entered into with the full and free consent of both people. Forcing someone to marry against their will is a serious matter and is a criminal offence. This is what separates a forced marriage, which is illegal, from an arranged marriage, where both people freely agree, which is lawful.

The law also offers protection to people who are at risk. A court can issue a special order called a Forced Marriage Protection Order. This order is designed to protect a person who is in danger of being forced into marriage, or who is already in a forced marriage. It is not a driving licence, a jury summons or a ballot paper. For the test, remember that the courts can issue a Forced Marriage Protection Order to protect someone at risk of forced marriage.
