Devolved member titles compared

Study note

A common test question asks you to match each devolved body with the correct title for its members, so it helps to learn all three together. In Scotland, members of the Scottish Parliament are called MSPs. In Wales, members of the Senedd are called MSs. In Northern Ireland, members of the Assembly are called MLAs, which stands for Members of the Legislative Assembly.

None of these members are simply called MPs; that title belongs to members of the UK Parliament at Westminster. All three devolved bodies are elected using forms of proportional representation. For the test, fix the pairs in your memory: Scotland with MSPs, Wales with MSs, and Northern Ireland with MLAs.

Memory tip: Scotland MSPs, Wales MSs, Northern Ireland MLAs, all by proportional representation.
