The Northern Ireland Assembly and Scottish Parliament

Study note

Two of the devolved bodies have well known homes that are useful to learn. The Northern Ireland Assembly meets at Stormont in Belfast. It is built around power sharing, which means the main parties from different communities share the running of government rather than one side ruling alone.

The Scottish Parliament meets at Holyrood in Edinburgh. It can pass laws on all the matters that are not reserved to the UK Parliament, which gives it wide powers over areas such as health and education in Scotland. So for the test, fix in your mind that the Northern Ireland Assembly sits at Stormont in Belfast, while the Scottish Parliament sits at Holyrood in Edinburgh, and that these are different from the Welsh Senedd in Cardiff and the UK Parliament at Westminster.

Memory tip: NI Assembly = Stormont (Belfast); Scottish Parliament = Holyrood (Edinburgh).
