The monarch provides stability

Study note

One of the most important things the monarch provides is stability and continuity. Governments come and go and Prime Ministers change after elections, but the monarch remains as head of state throughout. This gives the country a steady, lasting symbol that does not depend on which party is in power, which is something changing governments cannot offer.

The monarch also plays a key part in representing the UK to the rest of the world. The King receives foreign ambassadors and heads of state, and makes official state visits abroad, all of which help to build and support good relationships with other countries. These are ceremonial and representative duties rather than running the government. For the test, remember that the monarch provides stability and continuity as head of state, while governments change around them.

Memory tip: The monarch gives stability and represents the UK abroad, while governments come and go.
