The role of the monarch
Study note
The current monarch and head of state of the UK is King Charles III, who became king in 2022 on the death of Queen Elizabeth II. As head of state he stands for the whole nation rather than for any one political party. A central rule of the monarchy is that the monarch must stay politically neutral, so the King does not take sides in politics, does not lead a party, and does not choose the laws.
The monarch is not elected by the public, unlike a president in many other countries. The role is inherited and continues for life. The monarch carries out ceremonial and constitutional duties, represents the UK at home and abroad, and provides a sense of unity and continuity. For the test, remember the key facts: the monarch is King Charles III, he became king in 2022, he is head of state, and he remains politically neutral.
Memory tip: The monarch is head of state and stays politically neutral.
