Study note
The UK is a mixed society in which many religions are practised side by side. Christianity has historically been the main religion and is still the largest faith in the country today. Surveys of belief have consistently shown Christians forming the biggest single group, well ahead of any other religion.
Alongside Christianity, sizeable communities follow Islam, Hinduism, Sikhism, Judaism and Buddhism, so a wide spread of world faiths is represented across British towns and cities. A large number of people also say they have no religion at all. People in the UK are free to follow any faith they choose, or to follow none, and this freedom of religion is an important part of British life.
