UK landmarks

Study note

The four nations of the UK each have famous landmarks worth knowing. In England, Big Ben is the nickname for the great bell of the clock at the Houses of Parliament in London, and the clock tower is now called the Elizabeth Tower. In Scotland, Edinburgh Castle stands above the capital city and is one of the country's best-known sights.

Wales is famous for Snowdonia, a national park in the north of the country that contains Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales. Northern Ireland has the Giant's Causeway, a natural rock formation of stone columns on its north-eastern coast. It is easy to remember these as Big Ben in London, Edinburgh Castle in Scotland, Snowdonia in Wales and the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland. The Eiffel Tower, often given as a wrong option, is in Paris and not a UK landmark.

Memory tip: Big Ben (London), Edinburgh Castle (Scotland), Snowdonia (Wales), Giant's Causeway (NI).
