Film and cinema
Study note
The UK has an important film industry with a long history. Films were first shown publicly in the UK in 1896, and British actors, directors and films are known across the world. Some of the most successful film series ever made, such as Harry Potter and James Bond, have been produced in UK studios.
One of the great early stars of cinema was Sir Charlie Chaplin, who became world-famous in the silent film era for his tramp character and built much of his career in Hollywood. British actors have continued to win major awards, and the British Academy Film Awards, run by BAFTA, are the UK equivalent of the Oscars. For this topic, the key fact is that Charlie Chaplin became famous in the early days of cinema.
