Pubs and drinking age rules

Study note

Public houses, usually called pubs, are an important part of social life in the UK, and traditional pub games such as pool and darts are popular. There are clear rules about the age at which people can drink alcohol.

You must be 18 or over to buy alcohol in a pub or night club. There is one important exception: when they are 16 or 17, young people are allowed to drink wine or beer with a meal in a hotel or restaurant, but only if they are with someone over 18. So the key facts to remember are that you must be 18 to buy alcohol, and that pool and darts are traditional pub games.

Memory tip: Buy alcohol at 18; at 16 you may have wine or beer with a meal if with an adult over 18.
