Tennis, golf and the Ashes
Study note
Several of the UK's most famous sporting events are in tennis, golf and cricket. The Wimbledon Championships take place each year at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London and are the only one of the four tennis Grand Slam tournaments still played on grass.
Modern golf can be traced back to 15th-century Scotland, and the Open Championship is the only one of golf's major tournaments held outside the United States. In cricket, the Ashes is the famous Test series played between England and Australia. So for this topic, remember Wimbledon as the grass-court Grand Slam, golf as a Scottish game from the 15th century, and the Ashes as England versus Australia.
Memory tip: Wimbledon: only grass Grand Slam; golf from 15th century Scotland; the Ashes (England v Australia).
