Cricket, golf and rugby
Study note
Several of the world's major sports began in Britain. Cricket originated in England and is still a popular summer game. The most famous cricket contest involving England is the Ashes, a Test series played against Australia.
Golf is traditionally associated with Scotland, where the modern game can be traced back to the 15th century, and the town of St Andrews is known as the 'home of golf'. Rugby also began in England, in the early 19th century, and later split into two codes, union and league. A simple way to remember this topic is cricket and the Ashes for England, golf and St Andrews for Scotland, and rugby for England as well.
Memory tip: Cricket (England, the Ashes), golf (Scotland, St Andrews), rugby (England).
