Eid and Vaisakhi
Study note
Eid al-Fitr is an important Muslim festival that marks the end of Ramadan, the month during which Muslims fast and do not eat or drink during daylight hours. Eid al-Fitr is a time of celebration when families and friends gather, give thanks and share special meals, and many Muslims in the UK take part.
Vaisakhi, which is also spelt Baisakhi, is a Sikh festival celebrated on 14 April each year. It marks the founding of the Sikh community known as the Khalsa. To keep these straight, link Eid al-Fitr with Muslims and the end of Ramadan, and Vaisakhi with Sikhs and the date 14 April.
Memory tip: Eid al-Fitr ends Ramadan (Muslim); Vaisakhi (14 April) is a Sikh festival.
