Diwali and the festival of lights

Diwali is known as the festival of lights and is celebrated mainly by Hindus and Sikhs, usually in October or November and lasting for around five days. During the festival people light lamps and candles to symbolise the victory of good over evil and of light over darkness, and they often decorate their homes, exchange gifts and enjoy special foods.

Diwali is widely celebrated in the UK, and one of the biggest celebrations takes place in the city of Leicester. The single most important fact to remember is that Diwali is the festival of lights, celebrated by Hindus and Sikhs.
