Hallowe'en and Guy Fawkes
Study note
Hallowe'en, 31 October, is an ancient festival with roots in marking the start of winter. Young people dress up in frightening costumes and play 'trick or treat', and many carve lanterns from pumpkins. Bonfire Night, 5 November, remembers the failure of Guy Fawkes and other Catholics to blow up the Protestant king in the Houses of Parliament in 1605.
Memory tip: Hallowe'en 31 October (trick or treat); Bonfire Night 5 November (Guy Fawkes, 1605).
