Hallowe'en and Guy Fawkes
Study note
Hallowe'en falls on 31 October and is an ancient festival whose roots lie in marking the start of winter. Today young people often dress up in frightening costumes and play 'trick or treat', going from door to door, and many people carve lanterns out of pumpkins.
A few days later, on 5 November, comes Bonfire Night. It remembers the failure of a plot in 1605 when Guy Fawkes and other Catholics tried to blow up the Protestant king in the Houses of Parliament. People light bonfires and set off fireworks. So for this topic, remember Hallowe'en on 31 October and Bonfire Night on 5 November, marking the failed plot led by Guy Fawkes.
Memory tip: Hallowe'en 31 October (trick or treat); Bonfire Night 5 November (Guy Fawkes, 1605).
