Dickens, Hardy and Stevenson

Study note

The 19th century produced some of Britain's most famous novelists. Charles Dickens wrote popular novels such as Oliver Twist and Great Expectations, and he created characters that are still well known today, including the miser Scrooge, who appears in A Christmas Carol.

Thomas Hardy wrote novels about rural society, among them Far from the Madding Crowd. Robert Louis Stevenson, a Scottish author, wrote adventure and mystery stories including Treasure Island and Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. So for this topic, link Dickens with Oliver Twist, Great Expectations and the character Scrooge, and Robert Louis Stevenson with Treasure Island and Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.

Memory tip: Dickens (Great Expectations), Hardy (rural novels), Stevenson (Treasure Island).
