Study note
The UK has produced many famous authors over the centuries. Charles Dickens wrote popular novels in the 19th century, including Oliver Twist and A Christmas Carol, and created memorable characters such as Scrooge. His work is fiction in the form of novels rather than plays or scientific writing.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a Scottish author who created the detective Sherlock Holmes, one of the best-known characters in crime fiction. Roald Dahl, who was born in Wales, is famous for children's books such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. A handy way to remember these authors is Dickens for Oliver Twist, Conan Doyle for Sherlock Holmes and Roald Dahl for much-loved children's stories.
