Capability Brown and garden design
Study note
Garden design and landscaping have long been important in the UK. In the 18th century, Lancelot Brown, who was nicknamed 'Capability' Brown, became famous for designing the grounds of large country houses. He arranged grass, trees and lakes so that the finished scenery looked natural, rather than formal or geometric.
Gardening remains a much-loved part of British life, and each year the Chelsea Flower Show in London showcases garden design and plants from Britain and abroad. So for this topic, remember that Capability Brown was the famous 18th-century designer who made country house grounds look like natural landscapes.
