The Roman invasions of Britain
Study note
Julius Caesar led a Roman invasion of Britain in 55 BC, but it failed, and for nearly 100 years Britain stayed outside the Roman Empire. In AD 43 the Emperor Claudius led a new invasion that succeeded, and the Romans went on to occupy almost all of Britain despite resistance from some British tribes.
Memory tip: Caesar 55 BC = failed; Claudius AD 43 = the conquest succeeds.
