The Iron Age: hill forts, Celtic language and the first coins
Study note
The Iron Age followed the Bronze Age, when people learned to make tools and weapons from iron. People lived in roundhouses grouped into larger settlements and built defended sites called hill forts, a famous example being Maiden Castle in Dorset. They spoke a Celtic language and made the first coins to be minted in Britain, some bearing the names of Iron Age kings, marking the beginnings of British history.
