The UK leaves the European Union
Study note
In a referendum held in 2016, people in the United Kingdom voted on whether to remain in or leave the European Union, and the result was a vote to leave. This referendum took place in 2016, which is the year to remember for the vote itself.
Following the referendum, the UK formally left the European Union in 2020. This whole process of leaving the EU is commonly known as 'Brexit'. Because the UK left in 2020, it is no longer a member of the European Union, so any statement that the UK is currently a member is false. Be careful to keep the two dates apart: the referendum was in 2016, and the UK actually left in 2020. Brexit is the popular name for this departure, not devolution, the Reformation or the Restoration.
Memory tip: Referendum 2016 -> UK leaves the EU in 2020 (Brexit).
