Music and the Proms
Study note
The UK has a rich musical tradition that ranges from classical composers to world-famous pop and rock bands. Classical figures include Sir Edward Elgar, while in popular music few groups are as famous as The Beatles, who came from Liverpool and went on to huge international success. Pop and rock have remained an important part of British life since the 1960s.
A highlight of the classical calendar is the BBC Proms, a famous series of classical music concerts held each summer at venues including the Royal Albert Hall. The season finishes with the well-known Last Night of the Proms, which is shown on television. So you can pair Elgar with classical music, The Beatles with pop from Liverpool, and the Proms with a summer season of classical concerts.
Memory tip: Elgar (classical), The Beatles (pop); the Proms = summer classical concerts.
