Trafalgar and Admiral Nelson (1805)
Study note
During the long wars with France, the Royal Navy won a famous victory at sea. In 1805 it fought the combined fleets of France and Spain and defeated them at the Battle of Trafalgar. The commander of the British fleet was Admiral Nelson. He won the battle but was killed during the fighting, so remember that he both triumphed and died at Trafalgar in 1805.
Nelson is still remembered all around Britain. Nelson's Column, which stands in Trafalgar Square in London, is a monument built in his honour. His flagship, HMS Victory, has been preserved and can still be visited today in Portsmouth. So if asked where his ship can be seen, the answer is Portsmouth.
Memory tip: Trafalgar 1805. Nelson wins at sea but dies; Nelson's Column and HMS Victory remember him.
