Languages across the nations

Study note

English is the main language of the United Kingdom and is spoken across all four nations, but it is far from the only language used. Different nations have their own languages that sit alongside English and reflect their separate histories and cultures.

Welsh is widely used in Wales, where it has official status and appears in schools, on signs and in public life. Forms of Gaelic are spoken in parts of Scotland, especially the Highlands and Islands, and Irish Gaelic is among the languages associated with Northern Ireland.

For the test, the correct picture is that English is the main UK language while Welsh is used in Wales and Gaelic in parts of Scotland. Statements such as English not being spoken anywhere, or Welsh being the main language of England, are wrong answers.

Memory tip: Welsh in Wales; Gaelic in parts of Scotland; English everywhere.
