Life in the UK Test

Languages

Study note

English is the main language of the United Kingdom and is spoken across all four nations. It is used in schools, government and everyday life, and it is the language in which the Life in the UK Test is usually taken.

Alongside English, other languages are spoken in different parts of the country. Welsh is widely used in Wales, where it appears on road signs, in schools and in public life, and it has official status there. Forms of Gaelic are spoken in parts of Scotland, particularly in the Highlands and Islands.

For the test, remember that English is the UK's main language, but that it is not the only one. Welsh belongs to Wales and Gaelic to parts of Scotland. Statements such as Welsh being the main language of England, or English being rarely spoken, are wrong answers.

Memory tip: English everywhere; Welsh in Wales; Gaelic in Scotland.
