Currency

Study note

The currency of the United Kingdom is the pound sterling. It is shown by the symbol £, which you will see on prices, banknotes and coins throughout the country. The pound is the only official currency of the UK.

Each pound is divided into 100 pence, usually written as 100p. So an amount such as 250p is the same as two pounds and fifty pence. Knowing that there are exactly 100 pence in a pound is a simple but common test point.

An important thing to remember is that the UK does not use the euro, even though many nearby European countries do. If a question offers the euro, the dollar or another currency as the currency of the UK, those are wrong answers. The correct answer is always the pound sterling.

Memory tip: £1 = 100 pence.
