National plant emblems
Study note
Each country of the UK has its own traditional plant emblem, a flower or plant that has come to stand for that nation. These emblems appear on flags, sports shirts and national occasions, and the test often asks you to match each plant to the right country.
The four emblems are: the rose for England, the thistle for Scotland, the daffodil for Wales, and the shamrock for Northern Ireland. Wales is sometimes also associated with the leek as well as the daffodil, so do not be surprised to see either linked to Wales.
The usual trap in the test is swapping the plants between nations. Remember that the rose belongs to England, not the shamrock, and the thistle belongs to Scotland. If you see the shamrock paired with England, that pairing is wrong, because the shamrock is the emblem of Northern Ireland.
Memory tip: Rose (England), Thistle (Scotland), Daffodil/Leek (Wales), Shamrock (NI).
